Brothers The Vigils
The Author
Jerry Renault
Jerry seems to be the main character of the book. The theme is based upon him refusing to sell chocolates during the annual school sale. Once the Vigils get involved, Jerry's life becomes a living hell. Jerry is like any other normal freshman, but his mother had passed away from an illness, and his father decided to move into an apartment after her death. Feelings were not the same between Jerry and his father. Due to the pain of his mothers passing on, Jerry thinks he needs to be a part of something. This scrawny scraggly of a freshman goes out for the football team, and proves to be of worthy quality, that is until his team-mates turn icy on him. Goober
The Goob is a great guy, who becomes close friends with Jerry. He seems a quiet boy, who has great moral values. When Goober realizes how the school rallies against Jerry, he drops out of all activities in protest of their cruel ways. Though this was a silent protest, it was a protest that the Goober felt had great importance. Goober is an excellent runner, and clears his mind when he runs; it was a big decision to not go out for track in protest of the schools ways. Goober was involved in the room "19" incident, and hasn't felt the same since. Ever since all of the desks came tumbling in fury to the ground, Goober has had an unclear conscience (especially after Brother Eugene had a nervous break down and left Trinity forever). Archie
Archie Costello is the assignor of the Vigils. At first his pranks are harmless, until he comes into a scheme with Brother Leon. Archie not only pledged his commitment to the chocolate sale, but the commitment of the Vigils. Archie just gets into things deeper and deeper, Leon only caring about his precious chocolates being sold. With the power of Leon behind him, Archie goes to bigger and better heights with his "assignments", eventually involving the whole school in what could have turned out to be a huge riot. Obie
Obie is the secretary of the Vigils, who both admires and hates Archie. Obies goal is to get Archie in his own act with out directly being involved. Obie has the low-down on every person (males) in Trinity, and could pull up a profile with a simple flip of the note book. Though Obie is not a character with great powers or recognition, he does become one of great importance through out the novel. Emile
- Janza is a senior longing to become one of the Vigils. Basically Janza is an over grown ape, who we know as an "Archie wannabe". Janza basically gets used by Archie through out the whole book for his bronze and not the brains. Brian Cochran
Brian is the poor boy that Leon picks to tally the totals of the chocolate sale. Cochran is apparently a great Algebra student, yet Leon always puts his hard works and efforts down. Chochran is the boy who tiped Obie off about Leon being in trouble with school funds that he used for his own personal vendetta. Cochran seems to be the bearer of bad news through out a great portion of the book.
